view Abstract Citations (117) References (76) Co-Reads Similar Papers Volume Content Graphics Metrics Export Citation NASA/ADS Peculiar Galaxies and Radio Sources Arp, Halton Abstract It is shown that radio sources are not distributed randomly over the sky but are associated with galaxies, often luminous, peculiar galaxies, and nearby groups of galaxies. The most common pattern observed is a radio source some degrees distant from a peculiar galaxy and a second source about the same distance away on the opposite side. These bracketings across central peculiars are shown to be statistically significant. Evidence of luminous intergalactic material lying along the directions to these radio sources, and also elongated along these directions, is presented. Taken together with the disturbed, eruptive appearance of the central peculiars, these observations suggest that material is ejected oppositely from the central galaxies. The ejected material then forms, or is responsible for the formation of, other galaxies, radio galaxies, quasi-stellar radio sources (QSS), and blank field sources of radio emission. The latter three are shown to comprise the class of radio sources here associated with central peculiars. The regions around NGC 5128 and the Virgo Cluster are shown to be very active, with many radio sources and galaxies emanating in spiral distribution from the central brightest galaxy. This spiral distribution is attributed to rotation of the ejection axis with time. Redshifts of some of the central peculiar galaxies have been observed, and their relation to those redshifts which are known for the associated radio sources are discussed. It does not seem possible to avoid the conclusion that most of the QSS redshifts and a component of the radio galaxy redshifts are due to a cause other than velocity translation of the galaxy. It is concluded that there is a continuity of physical properties bridging the galaxies, radio galaxies, and quasi-stellar radio sources.
