Abstract

AbstractPeat occurs abundantly in nature in various forms. Its chemical composition varies widely with geographical region, age and within individual deposits due to the chemical reactions resulting in its formation. However, it is now realized that the basic chemical and physical properties of most peats are beneficial to sorption and ion exchange processes. The potential range of environmental uses for peat described in this paper vary from the treatment of oil spills and textile effluents to VOC removal and metalion removal from waste streams.
