Pease Based on Human Rights: XXVIII World Congress on Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy

Abstract

The article is an overview of the XXVIII World Congress on Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy, held in the summer of 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal. The general theme of the Congress – “Peace Based on Human Rights” – raises fundamental questions about the correlation of the two basic modern values – peace and human rights. They are necessary conditions for the existence of human and humanity, but are in danger: we strive for peace, but it is not genuine if it is not based on human rights. The author of the article focuses on the plenary lectures of the Congress participants, who considered the relationship between peace and human rights from different points of view. Plenary speakers pay attention to such contexts of the problem as moral and legal rights, international criminal justice, the notion of war and peace in the context of transnational terrorism, human security, the right to resist, the concept of law and legal revolution, nationalism and state sovereignty, cosmopolitan theories of perpetual peace, refugees, justice and solidarity, the political and philosophical foundations of human rights, and some other pressing issues of contemporary philosophy of law.
