Abstract

It is shown that a sudden commencement of magnetic storm can initiate magneto-acoustic oscillations of the boundary of the magnetosphere in a direction transverse to itself. The characteristic oscillations thus set up will cause a periodic variation of the path length in the outer magnetosphere for the shorter period micropulsations. This will produce a long period modulation of the transmission coefficient for the shorter period micropulsations. The result will be the appearance of amplitude modulated signals on the surface of the Earth which are known as pearl-type micropulsations.
