Abstract

The manifestation of the indentation size effect as well as the change in elastic modulus of the Fe–20 wt % Cr alloy under nanoindentation in the annealed and irradiated (with 2 MeV electrons) state are studied. It is found that, within the range of the measurement results, all experimental points fit on one curve of the corresponding dependences. From this, it is concluded that there is no effect of irradiation on the nanocharacteristics of the alloy. A peaked modular effect is found—a sharp increase and then a rapid decrease in the elastic modulus of the alloy during nanoindentation. The thickness of the layer in which this effect is manifested does not exceed ~1500 nm. A noticeable experimental scatter in the measurement results is explained by the possible formation of a developed relief of the surface during annealing.
