Abstract

Cardiopulmonary exercise performance reflects cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, metabolic and systemic physiological reserve. The gold-standard indicator of physical and exercise capacity has been peak oxygen uptake (VO2max). In individuals who cannot fully exert themselves, oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) has been reported to be a useful alternative to VO2max. OUES incorporates logarithmically transformed minute ventilation (VE) and the slope of multiple VO2 values at different time points.
