Abstract

Education is a strategic area through which peace can be built in a society, so educational institutions and, especially, teachers have a key role in the construction of peace. In this chapter, we share the implementation of a course on Peace Education in an MA program in English Language Teaching (ELT) program at the Universidad del Norte in Colombia. The MA in ELT program aims to prepare teachers of English with solid theoretical, linguistic, methodological, and research foundations and also increase their awareness of their role as agents of social change in the classroom at a time when Colombia is undergoing a process of peacebuilding after ending the longest conflict in Latin America with the FARC-EP. The special course on Peace Education was included in the MA in ELT program—to help teachers see this potential in language teaching and the active role they can play in encouraging social change from their own language classrooms.
