Abstract

Interdisciplinary perinatal cooperation in children with a life-shortening or life-threatening illness requires good clarification and counselling of the parents. Depending on the etiology, three palliative medical ways of care are conceivable from a neonatal point of view: the palliative birth, inpatient palliative care in the neonatal unit and specialized outpatient pediatric palliative care. The medically indicated therapeutic options must be examined first in order to define the therapy goal in shared decision making with the parents. Basically, it is important to avoid painful conditions or to provide good treatment to provide space for the existing quality of life of the child and to accompany the processing of grief of the familial system.
