Abstract
ABSTRACT A method to evaluate the performance of PDC and tricone bits is presented based on their cost, on a foot basis, and the rock strength properties (shear stress for PDC bits and compressive stress for tricone bits). The results showed that much data is needed for PDC performance evaluation when compared to a similar procedure for tricone bits, mainly due to the better description of the tricone bit when using the currently proposed IADC classification system.
