Abstract

Bariatric surgery is a surgical operation performed in the digestive system to enable patients with morbid obesity or are overweight to lose weight according to their body mass index (BMI). It is aimed to understand the overview the frequency of obese and overweight individuals among Turkey population, to examine the total number of bariatric surgical procedures health technology assessments of bariatric surgery report (HTA) and the cost and reimbursements by social health systems and private health organizations for bariatric surgery in Turkey. The OECD (2011-2017) Turkey report was accepted for the data for the frequency of obese and over-weighted people among the general population Turkey. Operational cost and reimbursement of cost, analyses of bariatric surgery in Turkey is provided by a study published in 2014. The data about the patient profile who bariatric surgery can be applied, the indications for bariatric surgery, and centers where it can be applied in Turkey and possible annual procedures were obtained from the literature. Overweighted and obese individuals constitute 64.4% of Turkey's population. The rate of increase in obesity was 10.8% between 2014 to 2017 in Turkey. According to the results of the analysis, the total economic burden attributable to obesity for Turkey is rated as 1.73% of GDP in 2012. The operational cost of a tube stomach surgery in the health unit of the Turkish Union of Public Hospitals (TKHK) was found at 8930 TL. Due to the 64.4% rate of the obese population of Turkey's population, the importance of prevention and treatment should be given in this regard. Turkey HTA report mentioned the interest and the studies in this manner. Policymakers should take into account the studies and implement new policies about obesity and bariatric surgery for Turkey.
