Abstract

1) to assess medication adherence in outpatients with type 2 diabetes at Hue University Hospital and 2) to determine factors associated with medication adherence in those patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 294 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Medication adherence assessment was carried out with Morisky 8-item questionnaire. Factors associated with medication adherence were determined with logistic regression. 31.9% of the patients were not adherent to their medication. Barriers of low medication adherence were: difficulty in remembering medication use schedule (54.6%), forgetting to take medication (40.8%), uncomfortable feeling with long-term medication use (39.0%) and intentionnally stop of medication use in case that the disease gets worse (14.5%). Factors associated with medication adhrence were found: Education level (Illiterate vs. High school, OR= 4.74; CI 95%: 1.16 – 19.27), Medication use regimen (Injection and oral vs. Oral, OR = 0.41; CI 95%: 0.17 – 0.93), Reminder to take medication from physicians (Frequent vs. rare, OR = 1.84; CI 95%: 1.01 – 3.35) and Satistaction on healthcare services (No vs. Yes, OR = 0.33; CI 95%: 0.12 – 0.86). Medication nonadherence was still high (31.9%) in outpatients with type 2 diabetes. The factors associated with medication adherence could help to develop interventions aiming to improve medication adherence in those patients.
