Abstract

Oncologic surgical ablation of tumors in the oral cavity often results in defects that affect speech, swallowing, mastication and appearance in patients. With the advances of surgical reconstruction and prosthodontic techniques, many of these disabilities can be reduced, but elimination and resolution for full functional rehabilitation has remained elusive in some patients. A team approach is necessary if optimum levels of rehabilitation are to be achieved. This presentation will focus on the specific issues and challenges pertaining to successful rehabilitation in these patients. The surgical and prosthetic considerations in rehabilitation of defects in the maxilla/soft palate and mandible will be discussed.
