Abstract

The aim of this study was to estimate the mean cost per caregiver of informal care during the first year after myocardial infarction event in France. We also realized an approximation of the overall mean cost of myocardial infarction management during the first year in order to quantify the relative weight of informal care. We used the Handicap-Santé French survey carried out in 2008 to obtain data about MI victims and their caregivers. After obtaining the total number of informal care hours provided by caregiver during the first year after MI event, we estimated the value of informal care using the contingent valuation method. Then, we carried out a systematic literature review of studies reporting costs associated with the myocardial infarction management in France according to the PRISMA guidelines to estimate an approximate overall mean cost of myocardial infarction management and quantify the proportion of informal care cost. For MI people receiving informal care, an annual mean cost was estimated at €12,798 (SD=13,425) per caregiver during the first year after myocardial infarction event and appears to represent the greatest weight of the approximate overall mean cost of myocardial infarction. The present study suggests that informal care should be included more widely in economic evaluations not only about chronic diseases but also for acute illness in order not to underestimate the cost of diseases which induce disability.
