Abstract

Soil samples were collected at 33 sites in the northern part of Switzerland (Rheinfelden to Wallbach), and analyzed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs). Concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs in the top soil ranged from 0.5 to 26.1 ng TEQ/kg (TEQ: toxic equivalents). Approximately 80% of the samples have concentrations <5 ng TEQ/kg, which is slightly above the background level in rural areas which was determined to be ∼1 ng TEQ/kg.
