Abstract

Failure behavior of polycarbonate(PC) under pure shear and simple tension was investigated in air at high temperature. Only shear flow with clear shear bands was observed under pure shear. Under simple tension, however, craze formation occurred at lower stress, and then shear flow was also observed at higher stress. The critical stresses for shear flow under both stress states were lower than those at room temperature. The shear flow was confirmed to obey the modified Tresca criterion. It was concluded that the craze formation does not occur when the shear flow precedes.
