Abstract

Karl Barth’s controversial letter of September 19, 1938, to his Prague colleague Josef L. Hromádka made theological history. He encourages the Czech soldiers in the »Sudeten crisis« to resist Hitler’s Germany also for the Church of Jesus Christ. In this contemporary historical context, Barth develops a legal-ethical argumentation whose connectivity is hermeneutically reflected in view of the current Ukrainian war. Along the lines of this legal-ethical argumentation, it is asked what it would mean for international law if Russia were to win or lose this war. Furthermore, based on Barth’s later »No to the atomic bomb« virtue-ethical considerations are given to the current escalation debate.
