Abstract

It is the purpose of this paper to argue for a retrenchment in public sector labour relations policy. In particular, it is suggested that bargaining over pay in the public sector should be eliminated, in favour of a policy where pay scales are set by an independent agency on the basis of comparability to the private sector. Arguments to support the position are given, and problems in implementation are discussed.
