Abstract

Plastics additives are used to optimize almost all aspects of a system. They can positively influence the processing properties of a system as well as its mechanical and aesthetical properties and, ultimately, the quality of the final product. In this feature article, we present a new coupling agent especially developed to improve the fiber-matrix adhesion in carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). The additive is used in vinyl ester and unsaturated polyester resins that are processed with carbon fibers into composite components. Strengths transverse to the fiber and flexural properties are increased and therefore enable a greater design of freedom. The additive can be added at any stage of the composite production. This includes a new technology, so called “Second Sizing” which extends the possibilities of application, e.g. fabric manufacturers.
