Abstract
An examination of the way Hemingway shaped events Pauline recorded in her journal for “Short Happy Life” reveals insights about the story. Hemingway transformed Pauline’s relationship with Percival for Margot’s relationship with Wilson and modified Pauline’s alienation for that of Margot’s. Ernest’s defensive reaction to Pauline’s hunting achievements became his narrative about a young woman who mistakenly kills her husband, an accident based on the time Hemingway was almost shot when his rifle accidentally fired.
