Abstract

The role of nonbeing in the thought of Paul Tillich and the Daoist thinker Zhuangzi is analyzed here. The age-old question "Why is there something and not nothing?" is inverted in order to reveal the hidden role of nonbeing in cosmic creation. What we will discover is that nonbeing does not threaten the existence of being but re-grounds it such that being and nonbeing become harmonized, rendering moot any attempt to think the question of being without nonbeing.
