Shells settled on deep-water muds were heavily bored by various microorganisms. Their morphological aspects in situ and the structural weathering of shells are described. The geographical and bathymetric distribution of the boring or endolithic microorganism is considered and their ecological and oceanographic role tentatively outlined.
