Abstract

Abstract Objectives To study the incidence of bronchial hyperreactivity in patients of congestive heart failure. Methods 50 subjects were divided into two groups. Group A was apparently healthy people taken as controls. Group B included patients of congestive heart failure. Both groups were then further subjected to spirometry followed by histamine bronchoconstriction test if FEV1/FVC > 85%. Results 1 subject out of 25 in group A as compared to 18 out of 25 in group B showed a fall in FEV1 of more than 20% on histamine challenge test. Hence the difference in bronchial hyperreactivity in both groups was statistically significant (p Conclusion 72% of the patients of congestive heart failure demonstrated bronchial hyperreactivity whereas the incidence in normal controls was only 4%.
