Abstract

Abstarct The patterns of attendance and truancy were recorded for 879 pupils throughout their first year at Comprehensive School. Mean attendance and truancy rates were found to be 91#lb95 and 1#lb72#pc respectively. These figures were contrasted with median attendance and truancy rates of 93#lb90 and 0#lb80#pc. For this age group, no significant sex differences were found in either attendance or truancy rates. However, both attendance and truancy rates varied as a function of term, with the Autumn term producing the best attendance rate and the lowest level of truancy. A ‘day of the week’ effect was also revealed. As the week progressed, attendance decreased and truancy increased.
