Abstract

HIS is a study of patterns in Negro-white differential mortality in the years 1930 through 1957. Two questions are posed: (1) What are the extent and characteristics of the generally downward trends in Negro male and female mortality relative to that for white males and females? (2) To what extent has there been color convergence-a lessening of the differentials-in the age-adjusted age-specific, and specificcause mortality experience of the two color populations? The mortality experience of the Industrial policyholders of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company will be used to supplement the official data.
