Abstract

A novel pattern reconfigurable patch antenna is presented in this paper. Slots are cut on the ground of the patch antenna and PIN diodes soldered in the slots' center are used to control their states. In this way, the radiation pattern of the patch antenna can be reconfigurable. Moreover, the radiation pattern of this antenna can be symmetric and the cross-polarization of the radiation can be low with the differential feeding. The patch antenna works at three modes (B-mode, L-mode and R-mode) and its operating frequency is 5.0 GHz. The reflection coefficients (S 11 ) of three modes are all less than −14.23 dB at 5.0 GHz. The main beam direction of the radiation pattern can be switched among θ=−32°, θ=0° and θ=+32°. The radiation pattern of this patch antenna can coverage θ=±54° within 3.2dB gain fluctuation by combining three modes.
