Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article demonstrates that receiving Holy Communion in the hand was the common practice of the Church both East and West from the second through to at least the eighth century. This practice was seen as reverent by the Fathers, and there is no indication that this practice was considered more inclusive of the laity. The article concludes by offering some suggestions of how to understand reverence in the Church today in light of this historical research.
