Patriarchy in bullfighting

Abstract

In this article we will discuss the patriarchal elements present in bullfighting: the polarized and exhaustive representation of the sexes, the discrimination of women bullfighters, the domination and violence that is exercised in the bullrings and their parallelism with the violence, particularly with the prostitution. The patriarchal system has placed the man in an elevated position, turning the differences between the sexes into a legitimate argument to subordinate the woman, and thus to justify their exclusion in bullfighting. There are many similarities between the domination and oppression of women in the prostitution system and that of the exploitation of animals in a specific system where bullfighting is located. Both remain as a stronghold in which patriarchy wants to preserve the illusion of a male hegemonic domain that contemporary society is fighting to overcome, and which gradually escapes. Neither bulls in bullfighting nor women in prostitution represent a limit to human use and satisfaction, especially for men. In both cases, individuals become a resource to use for money.

Qué entendemos por patriarcado

Hasta antes del siglo XIX se consideraba al patriarcado como el gobierno de patriarcas, ancianos cuya autoridad provenía de su sabiduría. 2. El antropocentrismo y androcentrismo forman parte de la esencia del sistema patriarcal. Y por androcentrismo entendemos que el hombre se identifica como “ser humano” en sentido neutral y excluye a las mujeres de la propia definición, es decir que el término de “hombre” o “varón” pasa a ser utilizado como sinónimo de persona.. El antropocentrismo se crece, porque todo está preparado para que el hombre siempre tenga que ganar. El torero tiene que superar la fuerza bruta del toro y dominar así la “naturaleza”. Hay una cita de un filósofo español contemporáneo, Víctor Gómez Pin, que hace referencia a la expresión corporal que debe de mantener el torero para hacer visible ese antropocentrismo del que se hace gala en la corrida. No es de extrañar entonces, que en una sociedad tan androcentrista como la nuestra, la tauromaquia siga siendo “cosa de hombres” en el imaginario colectivo
