Abstract
It's the question that sits at the very heart of the transplant system—who is “worthy” of receiving a new organ and who is not? That dilemma formed the premise for Patience, a one-act play written by Juliet Boobbyer and performed by the Sackville Theatre Company, as part of the 70th Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest arts festival. The play focused on two women, both waiting patiently for a liver transplant: Sophie Undridge, an 18-year-old with autoimmune hepatitis; and Bethan Wilkins, a 35-year-old alcoholic who had developed cirrhosis. The pair's lives are linked by Eva Barker, the junior doctor in charge of both of their cases and who, before the play ends, must decide which one of them will receive a liver transplant.
