Abstract

The patient with pancreatitis and organ related pain is commonly encountered in the hospital setting. The following chapter will seek to demonstrate the relevant diagnosis and management of these patients. This discussion begins with the epidemiology of chronic visceral pain and then moves into the mechanisms and pathophysiology of visceral pain. Diagnosis and management will be presented in a systematic way which covers the workup of the inpatient with visceral organ-related pain as well as treatment modalities. Both well-established interventions and novel interventions will be covered along with the advantages and disadvantages of each. The chapter concludes with a summary of pain assessment tools as well as the challenges that may face the clinician treating visceral organ-related pain in the inpatient setting.
