Abstract

This chapter sketches the patient safety profile of Thailand, drawing upon available empirical data. It provides an account of the Healthcare Accreditation Institute Public Organisation's (HAI) initiatives for promoting patient safety in the country. The chapter also provides tools and mechanisms to promote patient safety in hospitals. It presents programmes and mechanisms to promote patient safety in the healthcare system. Patients for Patient Safety (PFPS) Thailand is building a patient-led, national network of patients and patient organisations to lead a patient safety movement. The chapter shares the lessons learned through the patient safety movement and identifies a number of factors critical for the success in promoting patient safety in Thailand, but also elsewhere in the world. There has been a distinct approach towards integrating the experiences of healthcare practitioners and patients into the international and national policy agenda, to formulate strategies which are suitable for implementation in the specific contexts of the Thai healthcare system and within particular healthcare settings.
