Abstract

This paper mainly aims to gather data on strategies and guidelines for the implementation of SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die) in the context of healthcare, particularly in Emergency Care Units. Although the Lean methodology is widely disseminated in manufacturing sectors, for instance, it is still emerging in the context of healthcare and could be of use to complement the identification and elimination of wastes in healthcare processes, operations, and procedures. Hence, this study introduces eight elements capable of guiding health professionals on how to integrate the SMED method into the field of healthcare. Additionally, managerial implications were considered in patient flow based on Lean management.
