Abstract

Patient education and lifestyle modification are a cost effective management intervention in asthma. In recent years, there has been an increased emphasis on pharmacotherapy like inhaled corticosteroids with the long-acting beta agonist being the mainstay of asthma treatment. However, patient education, lifestyle modification and other non-pharmacological methods of asthma management, although much needed, have not received the same level of attention. Over reliance on pharmacotherapy has also increased the overall cost of management of asthma. Understanding our patients’ needs, addressing their concerns and empowering them with knowledge and skills for self-care form the most crucial components of asthma management. The core purpose of patient education is to establish a partnership based on knowledge and mutual trust. Lifestyle modification may be a relatively inexpensive modality that may lead to a significant improvement in control of symptoms, resulting in an increased asthma related quality of life. This chapter aims to highlight patient education and lifestyle modifications in conjunction with routine pharmacotherapy in the management of asthma.
