Abstract

The aim of this paper is to briefly examine some definitions of the complex phenomenon of an acute confusional state and to explore the nurse's role in the management and aftercare of an older person who experiences this. Seminal and more recent research will be reviewed. It is intended to discuss two differing definitions of an acute confusional state, prior to expanding on the context of the condition and then describing a nursing strategy. Also, it will be argued that maintenance of dignity, self-esteem and self-confidence in situations that can all too readily lead to ridicule and shame, are essential aspects of the management process, if true patient-centred care is to be achieved.
