Abstract

Circadian rhythm sleep–wake disorders (CRSWD's) are a group of sleep disorders characterized by a misalignment between the body's endogenous clock and the 24h socially and environmentally imposed sleep–wake cycle. According to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, third Edition (ICSD-3), there are seven distinct CRSD's: (1) Delayed Sleep Wake Phase Disorder (DSWPD); (2) Advanced sleep–wake phase disorder (ASWPD); (3) Irregular Sleep Wake Rhythm Disorder (ISWRD): (4) non-24h sleep–wake rhythm disorder (N24SWD); (5) Jet Lag Disorder; (6) Shift Work Disorder and (7) Circadian sleep–wake disorder not otherwise specified. This chapter briefly discusses each of the six primary CRSWD's, highlighting the epidemiology; etiology and pathophysiology; predisposing and precipitating factors; and associated complications and consequences of CRSWD's.
