Abstract
Natural outbreaks of inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) and hydropericardium syndrome (HPS) occurred in various broiler farms of coastal districts of Odisha within a span of 5 months from August to December, 2011. Pathological investigation revealed macroscopic lesion of pale, friable, haemorrhagic and swollen liver. Hydropericardium was seen in most of the cases. Occasionally, the pericardial fluid was coagulated giving cloudy appearance. Kidneys were pale and swollen. Histopathologically, changes like necrotic foci and reticulation in hepatic parenchyma were commonly observed, with presence of fatty changes in most of the instances. Intranuclear inclusions were often detected in hepatocytes that were taken as diagnostic for IBH. The disease occurred alone or in association with infectious bursal disease and colibacillosis.
