Abstract
The subject of pathological lesions related to disturbances of fat and cholesterol metabolism in man may be approached from the standpoint of systemic alterations versus local, and whether the lipid deposits are primary or secondary. Despite much new information concerning atheroma obtained recently by both experimental and clinical investigations, it is still impossible to state with certainty whether this disease is primarily a systemic disorder or one of multiple local origin. The most popular current concept is probably that which regards atheroma as a local manifestation in the arterial wall of a general disturbance of lipid metabolism, transport, or both.
