Abstract

Introduction: Despite the increasing recognition of hip joint pathology as a source of pain. There have been few studies presenting the pathology found at arthroscopy. (Mitchell et al 03, Byrd et al 01) This paper lists the pathology found in 99 hips during arthroscopy. Methodology: Details of patients who had undergone hip arthroscopy in the last 4 years were kept by the author. Those who were still contactable and signed consent forms were included in the study. All operation notes from hip arthroscopes performed by the surgeons in the study group are now standardised. Reports from prior to this time were coded onto a standard form. Results: Synovitis 47%; Labral flap tear 11%; Labral radial tear 35%; Labral fraying 16%; Labral degeneration 14%; Acetabular chondromalacia 25%; Femoral chondromalacia 17%; Rim lesion 55%; Ligamentum Teres injury 7%; Loose Bodies 2%. Conclusion: Mul!iple pathologies co-exist in the hip joint. Rim lesions and synovitis are the commonest findings.
