Abstract

Infection of the anterior midgut ceca (AMC) of hermit crabs by plerocercoids of the tetraphyllidean cestode, Calliobothrium verticillatum, is described. Plerocercoids are found only in the lumens of the AMC tubules. The categories of infection (mild, moderate, and severe) were defined based on the severity of the inflammatory reaction present in the AMC. Features of this parasite are more fully described elsewhere. The adult tapeworm is found in the spiral colon of the dogfish, Mustelus canis. Implications for the health of the hermit crab are discussed.
