Abstract

It is generally recognized that bone formation is confirmed adjacent to the tumor cells inside the stroma of the epithelial tumors. Although this has been dealt with as a dysplastic bone formation to date, there is scarecely any published literature on this subject. In the present study, therefore, the author was concerned with pathohistological examinations 77 of cases of the Pilomatrixoma and 14 cases of Graniopharyngioma, including 4 cases of Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst. These cases were studied from the stage of calcification to that of bone formation. As a result of the study, the author arrived at the following conclusions.1. In the fine structure of shadow and ghost cells, the existence of calcification was attested in the matrix vesicles lying between the tonofilament bundles, and its degree became greater in proportion to the progress of a disease.2. As regards the cases of Pilomatrixoma, bone formation was observed on those cases of old tumor age and a dysplastic bone formation was confirmed in the matrices or hyaline masses that were produced around the tumor cells.3. Moreover, in the center of a group of calcified shadow cells the existence of acidic glycosaminoglycans containing hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate (A and C) was definitely confirmed.
