Abstract

Diabetic polyneuropathy (DP) is a delayed complication of diabetes mellitus. One of the most relevant symptoms of DP is neuropathic pain syndrome. Mechanisms of neuropathic pain are not yet fully studied. But it’s well known that in neuropathic pain syndrome functional reconstructions are seen at all levels of the nervous system. Etiological, pathogenetic and symptomatic therapy is used for DP treatment. Etiological therapy focused on glucose blood level correction for long period. Alpha-Lipoic acid is one of the main drugs used for pathogenetic therapy. Anticonvulsants and antidepressants are also used for neuropathic pain syndrome management. In severe cases additional adjuvant therapy can be considered.
