Abstract

Patents are important elements for the protection of industrial property, in addition, studies have revealed that they can also be allies in signaling the quality of innovations with the aim of attracting private risk capital – venture capital. This is a relevant aspect because for companies to generate innovations they need to be able to expand their investments. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze patents from the perspective of quality signaling and mitigation of information asymmetry to attract venture capital investments for bioindustries in Amazonas. A qualitative bibliographical review research was used in which the results indicate that patents can be important quality signals for venture capital investors, however, when analyzing Amazonian bioindustries, a low number of patents is found, which may be a reflection of the technological level with low and medium complexity of local innovations, associated with bureaucracy and maintenance of patent records and local entrepreneurs' perception of the low added value that a patent can have for their business.
