Abstract

Patents can reflect corporation’s market layout. This paper explores the arrangement of four nanotechnology market fields of foreign corporations in China, including Nano-materials, Nano-electronics & information, Nano-biology & medical, Nano-measurement & process. The results showed that overseas companies have become more interested in China’s nano-markets, and the number of patents exhibited rapid growth after the year of 1997. In the overall patent layout, nano-materials and nano-electronics & information were the most important fields. U.S., Japan and Korea were more interested in China’s nanotechnology market than the other countries. The top 10 foreign corporations were Samsung, Philips, ITRI, 3M, IBM, Panasonic, GE, Sony, LG and Hitachi, respectively, which can be classified into two categories. In one category, nano-electronics & information were more important than the other fields, such as Philips; in the other category, nano-materials and nano-electronics & information were equally important in companies’ market layout, such as LG. All the top 10 corporations showed little interest in China’s nano-biology & medical and nano-measurement & process market.
