Abstract

Engravings showed in this article, made by French artists of the XIX century, depicted images where nature, gender and race were linked with geographic determinism thoughts. Female portraits of nudity are in addition linked with the attributions of eroticism in the Caribbean that also help in the construction of otherness by creating imaginary scenes in Europe about the tropics and its inhabitants. None of the engraving’s authors ever visited the Caribbean.
