Abstract

A frequency- and polarization-reconfigurable 2×2 patch antenna array is presented for 5G mid-band communications at 3.7 GHz. In this design, patches are alternatively arranged in horizontal and vertical configurations. The reconfigurability is achieved using one short-circuited varactor diode connected with each patch element. Frequency tuning is achieved when all varactors have same capacitance values and provide 45◦ linear polarization, while right hand or left hand circular polarization is obtained when horizontal and vertical patches have slightly different associated varactor capacitances that leads to 90° radiating phase difference. The proposed design is optimized to cover 3.71-4.15 GHz band with a tuning range of 12.7%.
