Abstract

With the rapid development of science and technology, especially great advances in life science, oral and maxillofacial reconstructive surgery in China has kept pace with time to bring a prosperous future in more than half a century. In this presentation, the past of OMS reconstructive surgery was reviewed, and the present situation of OMS reconstructive surgery was focused on with major achievements made in the following aspects: transplantation of revascularized tissues, artificial materials, platelet-rich plasma, distraction osteogenesis, microsurgery, arthroplasty, dynamic repair, and computer-assisted design. The contemporary progress trends were also discussed in life science and medicine, and the development of oral and maxillofacial reconstructive surgery in China was predicted, based on the understanding of the current status and national developing strategies on science and technology. Considering the future prospects of oral and maxillofacial reconstructive surgery in China, construction of academic organizations and training of specialists must be addressed. Standardized treatment modalities, regular follow-up protocol and adequate evaluation should be further improved; individualized comprehensive management of various oral and maxillofacial diseases such as reconstruction after ablative surgery, vascular anomalies, trauma, etc. should be adopted widely; integration of science, technology and medicine should be strengthened; novel multi-disciplines need to be explored; and finally basic researches particularly on congenital inherited OMS diseases should be promoted.
