Abstract

About 60 years ago the first experiment in which strong evidence for the phenomenon of a Giant Resonance was obtained, was planned and executed. The results of this experiment were published in 1937 in German, which is probably the reason that not many physicists nowadays actively involved in Giant Resonance research, realise how it started. The description of this beautiful experiment given in the chapter on the PAST is intended to fill this gap. The PRESENT situation of research in Giant Resonances is reflected in the Proceedings of this Conference. Rather than trying to summarise all the fascinating aspects of what was discussed, I concentrate on a few problems which should be adressed in the near future in order to complete our understanding of the many facets of Giant Resonances. The selection of these open questions was dictated by my own experience and interest. This means for instance that I am not discussing spin-flip resonances, although I was deeply impressed by the beautiful experimental methods recently developed. It is always difficult to look into the FUTURE of a lively field of research. But I could not resist the temptation to speculate a bit on what the role of Giant Resonances might be in the new field of research with unstable beams.
