Abstract

Geophysics publishes cutting-edge research, case histories, and tutorials in all fields of applied geophysics. Regular readers will have noticed that in the past couple of years, several special sections and supplements on specific subjects have appeared, in addition to the regular stand-alone papers. The phenomenon of special sections in Geophysics is not entirely new. Digging through the archives, I discovered that in 1978 George V. Keller edited a special section on geothermal exploration. On an irregular basis some other special sections appeared in the subsequent 25 years, often on “nonoil subjects” such as engineering and groundwater (1986), geophysics in archeology (1986), magnetic minerals (1991), shallow seismic reflection (1998), and mining geophysics (2000). Contrary to special sections, Geophysics supplements are separately bound issues on specific themes, mailed along with regular issues of Geophysics.
