Abstract

Through a series of case studies, twenty years of experience of OBS within StatoilHydro are assessed in light of Moore's law. These range from the early SUMIC project through to the latest developments of fiber optic sensors for permanent seismic. Assessing technology application and the volume of data generated and processed in these case studies it is demonstrated that developments in technology have allowed the spirit of Moore's law to be followed for Ocean Bottom Seismic. Assuming that spirit of Moore's law also becomes a goal for the seismic industry the future will see the development of exciting new OBS technologies and the transfer of OBS concepts to other geophysical applications.
