Abstract

The potential of ceramics to serve modern needs is increasing day by day. High hardness, lightweight, excellent wear and corrosion resistance, bio-compatibility combined with chemical inertness make the ceramics even more attractive in modern industrial practices. Because of high hardness and lower fracture toughness of ceramics, it is very difficult to machine them using conventional machining processes and also it is not economically feasible. The limitations posed by conventional machining processes are overcome by the invention of thermal energy based advanced machining processes. Of all the developed thermal energy based machining processes, Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is economical because of its non-contact and force free machining operation. The material removal by continuous recurring of electrical discharges made the EDM unique. Silicon Carbide (SiC) being one of the hardest ceramics, is currently finding its need in aerospace, automotive, space and other industries. Traditional sintering processes makes it difficult to manufacture complex shapes with SiC. Hence, in this paper, various electric discharge machining techniques have been discussed to machine silicon carbide.
