A nonlinear fibre mirror, using a semiconductor laser amplifier and an erbium-doped fibre amplifier, is used as both the gain medium and saturable absorber in a passively mode locked fibre ring laser. Pulses of less than 100 ps duration were generated at repetition rates of up to 2 GHz.
